With the advent and advance of IP multicast technology, multicast services are booming. On the other hand, how to organize the session description information effectively, transmit session announcement efficiently, and secure the session are more and more of a problem. In a word, session management is posing an challenge to the popularization of multicast applications.This paper addresses these issues of multicast session management, proposes its own solution architecture, and particularly, on several aspects, tackles problems which remain unsettled in traditional session management architecture.Firstly, the paper introduces the status quo of session management and its protocol stack which is commonly deployed on current IP network. Then, to solve current problems, based on SAP/SDP session announce protocol, the paper proposes the following solutions: By exploiting announcement hierarchy and agent, the efficiency in receiving session announcement could be improved; Concerning controlled network, a utility-function based bandwidth allocation algorithm is presented so that network resource could be controlled centrally and used effectively; Plus, to overcome deficiency of session security in traditional "light session" management architecture, an enhanced solution is given.Last, the author presents the implementation system of the above architecture, and evaluates its function and performance. Also, the author makes a prospect, that based on this paper, a further research on multicast session management of layered media and session key management could be set out.
