Currently, the researchs about theories, technologices and applications of Agent and Multi-Agent system (MAS) have been a hot theme in both academic and industrial domains.A single agent cannot accomplish the resolvent of all problems, so agents need to negotiate and cooperate through Agent Communication. Thus ,the base of the MAS's cooperation is the communication among agents in MAS.Because these agents have different backgournd and knowledge, they have different or overlapped or not identical concepts^ structs and methods. These dirctely led to the confusion in Agent Communication. So, we have to share knowledge among agens. Ontology-based agent communication is one of methods that can reduce the confusion in Agent Communication. Agent communication via Ontology may increase the efficiency of the communication and cooperation. And it can add the reusability, the inter-operation and the reliability of the software.FIPA (The Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents) is an international organization that is dedicated to promoting the industry of intelligent agents by openly developing specifications supporting interoperability among agents and agent-based applications. Multi-agent systems based upon FIPA specification offer good interoperability and resuability. In this thesis , Ontology service in FIPA multi-agent systems have been analyzed and assessed. Their advantages and disadvantages have been presented respectively. To overcome their weakness, a kind of improved distributed architecture and domain-based ontlogcial naming and ontology name resolve system named Ontology Name Service (ONS) have been proposed.
