Information Network Design and Network Performance Evaluation are critical areas of network research, and network simulation is an important method to carry out these research activities. It is a new area to-make network design and network performance evaluation via network simulation. In the thesis, the IPv6 packet process performance via network simulation is discussed.The network simulation is introduced, and a survey of network simulation tools is made. Specially, the network simulation software NS-2 is anatomized. The present, features and methods of applying the NS-2 are introduced. The software structure, principles of network simulating, principles of schedule, and the programming language including Tel and OTcl arediscussed. The method to add new modules into NS-2 is given.After analyzing NS-2, a new simulating module of bus-based router with single processor is designed and implemented in NS-2, which makes the simulating network closer to the real network, and improves the power of network performance evaluation. Based on the above, the Ipv6 packet process performance is studied by making a sample network simulation, by some experiments, the results of IPv6 packet process performance are got, and it is proved that the new module can work well in NS-2.
