This paper is concerned with the research on plane measurement based on images. At the beginning, the basic theory of plane measurement?some basic elements in planar projective geometry, including 2D protective plane, homogeneous coordinates and homography are introduced. The pinhole camera model and the basic algorithm of image measurement are discussed. After analyzing plane measurement detailedly, we know that the precision of measurement is decided by the precision of the homography between the image and the scenic plane. In the following chapter, several algorithms used to solve homography matrix are discussed.In order to improve the practicability of plane measurement based on images, setting the objects which indicate the feature information (like a moulding board) into a plane which has no feature information is needed. In our daily life, a plane awaiting measurement is not always an absolutely level plane. If the homography between the image and the whole world plane is only decided by the featured object which occupies small proportion of the plane awaiting measurement, the results of measurement will be imprecise. In this paper, several moulding boards are used to restrict the uneven plane in the practical measurement. The error caused by the lean of part plane is conquered and the precision of measurement is improved." Accident Scene Measurement System Based on Images" is an applied system based on plane measurement principle. This system integrates new achievements of the following research fields, computer vision, photography measurement and image processing, and has good real-time human-computer interaction. This system also has logical design, convenient operation, high precision and good applicability.The research on plane measurement and homography has many other applications, such as rectifying images, registering image sequences, etc. Image rectification can resume the true geometric figure of the object by removing the projective distortion from images. Image sequence registration can oversew an image-i-sequence to a new wide-screen image. Using this technique, the panoramic roaming of virtual environment can be realized.Another important technique in image measurement is extracting feature information from featured object in image plane. This technique is related to the precision and speed of plane measurement. Detecting feature lines from featured objects is well studied in this paper. Random sample theory is used in line detection, thereby, the disadvantages brought by traditional hough transform, for instance, large computing load, long computing time, large occupied memory, and low precision are eliminated. Line detection algorithm based on random sample theory make the plane measurement more precise and quicker.The achievements of research on plane measurement based on images have a pioneer effect on the research in this field, and the achievements will promote the developments of image processing , pattern recognition and virtual reality technology.
