Study Of News Values Theory In China

"News Values" is a basic theoretical categorization. Scholars have researched in this domain with great efforts and they have produced countless literatures related to it since Xu Bao-huang introduced it into China's study of journalism & communication. Unfortunately,China's academic circle of journalism & communication has been deficient in combing these original literatures in a comprehensive and systematic way,which was a practical approach to the depth of the theory and the transference of its paradigm.This thesis called News Values study in China,analyzing the situations from the dimension of literature study,takes its target at constructing a history of academic research.Preface:It outlines the causes and the design work of this thesis,and the latter includes the designs of the framework and the methodology. The framework attaches its importance to the two conspicuous time scans,that is to say,the period before 1949 and the New Times (after 1978). The methods taken in the two periods are different,the former is of a study of the original literatures by describing and commenting on them;while the latter is the content analysis by selecting a sample from the original literatures.A trace back to the history of the study of News Values theory in China before 1949,which can be divided into two stages:the initial stage and the flourishing stage. The initial stage was in the 1920's,represented by Xu Bao-huang,Ren Bai-tao and Shao Piao-ping and Pan Gong-zhan,on whom I comment in my thesis. The flourishing stage,beginning at the third decade,lasted for the whole fourth decade. It featured by "diversity and splendor " as Tong Bing,a noted modern journalism & communication scholar concluded. In view of above mentioned,while commenting on the Study of News Values Theory,I take into consideration of different political standpoints adopted by the following scholars:Liang Shi-Chun,Tian Zheng-yu,Ren Bai-tao,Guan Yi-xian,Sa Kong-liao,Yun Yi-qun,to reflect the features of the second stage commented by Tong Bing.The above mentioned scholars,taking respective angles in their specific research,they not only deposited a research tradition,such as making an associative investigation into News Values and News' Definiton,but also pioneered in their academic study. For example,Ren Bai-tao associated newsValues with News' Definition in the 1920's and pursued his research against the macro-background of News Profession Morality in 1930's when he developed a new research vision. Meanwhile,the internal research itself at this period existed great theoretical tensions. For instance,Sa Kong-liao,adopted alternative viewpoint from Yun Yi-qun on the issue of the Truth;while Guan Yi-xian was different from yun Yi-qun on the subject of whether there is a interdiciplinary pragmatic relationship between fae factors of News Value and those of News.The content analysis on the study of News values theory in the New Times (after 1979). Due to the great quantities of the literatures and a great coverage characterized in this period,I take sampling research as an approach,in order to reflect the situations in their width and depth as well,that is,a combination of micro-viewpoints with macro-viewpoints.In its structure,this chapter is divided into six parts. Part one,the sample that is used for the contents analysis;Part two,the definition of news values;Part three,the factors of News Values;Part four,subjective or objective? Part five,the distinctive conceptual thinking;Part six,the models of News Values theory. Part one involves in the diversified evaluations on the samples,trying to make them effective in constructing the academic stereotype of the study of News values theory in the New Times (after 1979). Part two,Part three,Part four and part five,with Degree of Conspicuity and Degree of Consensus as criteria,make elaborate content analyses from the quantitative and qualitative angles.
