In satellite networks, the configuration and maintenance of satellite modems are often manual, and therefore it is hard to allocate satellite channels dynamically. In this article, a distributed satellite modem control system, Satellite Channel Dynamic Backup System, is introduced. This system can dynamically configure the satellite modems, setup or release satellite links. It is used in the CERNET SDH satellite backup system, to allocate satellite resource and remotely manage satellite devices. This article introduces the system's design targets and the system plan. The distributed system control is implemented by master/slave mode. Satellite devices in each node are controlled automatically by computers, and the master node and slave nodes manage the interactions by specific communication protocols to setup/release satellite links. The system keeps master and slaves in touch through satellite channels and monitor the status of each channel indirectly. When in abnormal status, the system will try to recover the abnormal satellite device. Configuration data of satellite channels is stored in database. Operators can manage the system through Web mode or character mode configuration interface. In this article, we introduce the design principles of the hardware system and the interfaces between devices, also the layers and modules of the software system, hi addition, as two important parts in the whole development, the design and development of system specific protocols and database are also described.
