The language of news reporting is the most typical of journalistic English. Therefore, the study of the style of English news reporting has become necessary, and much has been completed concerning the stylistic analysis of news reporting, but the comparison of the styles between the English news reports composed by native speakers of English and those by speakers of ESL/EFL has hitherto not been processed much. Thus such a comparison has been attempted in this thesis. This thesis involves the stylistic comparison between the English news reports in Chinese newspaper, The China Daily, and those in American newspapers, The USA Today and The New York Times. Through the comparison it has been perceived that many similarities as well as differences, of which many readers are conscious but might not be in the position of offering a manifest description and explanation, exist between the English news reports in Chinese newspapers and American ones, which is anticipated to be of some assistance to English learners and journalists. The analysis reveals that the linguistic differences are existent chiefly at the graphological, lexical, and syntactical levels. The practical significance of this study is to indicate the similarities and differences between the English news reports in Chinese newspapers and those in American ones, and therefore ESL/EFL learners might be more efficient in their learning and acquisition in the future with the awareness of the similarities and differences and their causes.
