The content of this paper came from the renovation project of the proportioning system of No. 3 blast furnace in Hefei Steel & Iron Co. The former proportioning system became the bottleneck of the iron production due to the aging equipment and the low-level automation. Aimed at higher efficiency,stable and reliable operation and convenient supervisory,the project adopted a PLC-IPC combined hybrid control system with the merits of flexible configuration,accurate measurement,coordinated control,reliable performance and convenient maintenance,achieving a higher automation level of material proportioning. The content of the paper includes an overview of the evolution and the present state of production control system,the working principle of the proportioning system and the overall design of the new control system,focuses on the details of the Siemens PLC's application including hardware design,programming environment and software design,configuration software WinCC and some of its basic software design in the high level supervisory computer,as well as the communication between the PLC and the supervisory computer. The paper takes some viewpoints and thoughts acquired from the project as conclusion.
