The optical fiber communication technology is a subject to be concerned, and the plastic optical fiber(POF) communication is thought to be the most promising technology in past ten years. POP, with the superiority that glass optical fiber and cupreous cable can't provided, will become the first transmission medium for the short-haul, small and medium capacitance communication system, and the idea medium for FTTH. Multi-mode POP, whose advantages are large core diameter, easy-handling, low cost, light weight, remarkable flexibility and convenient fixing, has obvious predominance in bandwidth during the researches on POP, which prove multi-mode POP will have a potential market in the communication field. In a word, the research on POP is profound meaning.According to the requirement of key project "Graded-Index Plastic Optical Fiber" of Science Organization of Province, the paper introduces the basic characteristics of POP, generally analyses the loss mechanism, systematically introduces the whole experimental process ranged from the synthesization of POP material to the fiber drawing of the perform. The theoretical research is given on the bandwidth of SI-POF and GI-POF, and the reason is introduced that actual bandwidth is higher than theoretical bandwidth. It is expected that the researching result can direct our experiments.Because of the limitation of the experimental conditions and the shortage of the money, it is very regretted that we can't test the performance of our experimental production, including loss, bandwidth, transparence and so on. Moreover, some facilities are made by ourselves, so the equipments are simple and rough. However, they can fulfill the task of experiment and some achievements have been gained. We hope we will make progress continuously in the future researches and experiments.
