Although silicon optical fiber remains unsurpassed in optical communication area as guided-wave media. With large capacity data transmission system, automobile and other relate industry continued rapid growth, plastic optical fiber (POF) has gaining an increasing attention in the world, because of its remarkable flexibility, large core diameter and easy-handling. VESA have developed standard family network, and it shows that family network must be provided with at least lOOMbitIs date transmission rate. If we use copper cable, it can only transmission 4.5 meters, and it is heavy and expensive. The worst of all is it抯 great noise at the high transmission rate. On the contrary, the fiber nearly has no noise and it can hardly be affected. In addition, optic fiber has the advantage of high bandwidth, low attenuation. So it is widely used in trunk line. But the standard glass optic fiber is not the best for short distance transmission, such as local area network and fiber to the home. It has the unexampled merit, for example, easily made, low cost, light weight and high plasticity. The characteristic of large core diameter makes it can be easily connected. This can cut the whole system cost greatly. So POF is the preferred material in fiber to the home. But the high loss of POF restricts its widely use in many domains. With the development of society, it demands higher date transmission rate. In this condition. some Japan researchers bring forward the precept of graded-index POF. It seems to have the great future for its high bandwidth and large core diameter. It is considered as the most outstanding development in POF technology. Aim to let POF be compatible to the developing market, based on the requirements of key project ?Graded-Index Plastic Optical Fiber?of Science Organization of Province and the project 揚lastic Optical Fiber Amplifier?of National Natural Science Foundation, We have been researched on the POF抯 manufacture and loss factors systematically. The plastic optical fiber抯 fabricating process from raw material synthesis to fiber drawing was studied. The effect of III polymerization pattern on plastic optical fiber抯 property was observed. Plastic optical fiber~s core with poly(methyl methacrylate) was made. A new kind of initiator-fluorine containing organic radical, was then used to initiated the polymerization of monomer. By compared with different kind of Plastic optical fiber coating technology, ultraviolet polymerization method was applied to cure plastic optical fiber抯 coating, thus obtained the plastic optical fiber with excellent optical property. Because we are short of money in our study group, some facilities are made by ourselves, such as polymerization vessel, high-speed centrifrgal mining polymerization apparatus, etc. Though the equipments are simple and rough, they can fulfill the task of experiment and the result of the experiment is satisfying. But at the same time, there are some shortages inescapability. We can抰 test the performance of the graded-index plastic optical fibre which we made on our drawbench. This cumbers the course of advanced research. The control precision of electric furnace, the diameter of plastic fiber and the rotating speed of electric machine are under investigation.
