Research On The Synchronization Of UTRAN

Associated with the research project, the author has done some research on the synchronization issues in UTRAN and the synchronization methods used in IP networks to transport Circuit Emulation Services (CES). Firstly, the development of mobile communication and the synchronization technologies of current digital networks are briefly introduced. Then, after the depiction of the network architectures of UMTS and UTRAN, the five synchronization issues in UTRAN, including the "Network synchronization", "Node synchronization", "Transport Channel synchronization", "Radio Interface synchronization" and "Time Alignment Handling", are discussed in detail. After that, as to the transportation of CES in IP networks, two types of protocol stacks are identified, "IP over SDH/PDH" and "IP over Ethernet". In the former instance, the author has propounded three synchronization methods. They are "network clock extraction method", "adaptive clock method" and "residual time stamp method (RTS)". The theoretic basis and the datagram format of the newly propounded RTS method are presented. Finally, in the protocol stack of IP over Ethernet, after the analysis of plesiochronization method and external clock method, a newsynchronization method of Absolute Time Stamp (ATS) method is put forward, and detailed discussion is presented in this thesis.
