With the application of CAD/CAM technology and the development ofenterprise, the traditional enterprise graphics & archives management has notsatisfied the variable market and project requirement. To cater for the need ofengineering graphics & archives management with computer in enterprise, andrealize the intelligent management of engineering graphics & archives, andenhance the cooperation among designers by archiving and querying effectivelyand quickly, it is necessary to adopt a highly integrated distributed engineeringgraphics & archives management system.In this paper, the current technologies of engineering graphics & archivesmanagement and application have been analyzed. Based on the research ofcomponent technology, especially CORBA (Command Object Request BrokerArchitecture) technology, the program design procedure and method based onCORBA have been summed up. The method how to define data object, CORBAobject and component is also presented in this paper. Applying the method above,combining three tiers C/S structure with component technology, an architectureof distributed engineering graphics & archives management system has beenpresented, six application components including authority managementcomponent, process management component and graphics & archivesmanagement component have been designed, a distributed engineering graPhics& archives management system based on CORBA Which supports design processmanagement has been implemented.The meaning of our research is that the component technology and three tiersdatabase technology have been combined firstly, and are used in the engineeringgraphics & archives management in the distributed engineering graphics &archives management system. On one hand, the component we designed can bereused in other application systems by using the component technology. On theother hand, it not only can resolve the "fat client" problem in two tiers databasetechnology but also can simplify the installation, test and maintenance of thesystem. At the same time, since CORBA is used as the middleware, the languageindependence and the heterogeneous platform in system design have been solved,which can make our system become a real open system. The research onengineering graPhics & archives management in this paPer can provide both anew system designing and managing method and a new field for the aPplicationof computer integration.
