Specialty: Documentary Collation & Studies On Modern History of China Supervisor: Professor Zhang Jiafan, Professor Pang Zuxi and Dr. Ren Guanwen Postgraduate: Yang TianbaoWen Yiduo( 1899-1846), a famous writer, is also a noted documentalist of China growing in the beginning of 1920s . He is conversant with learning ancient and modern, at home and abroad, and his research covers extensive areas. Beginning his research with the collation of the poetry and works in the Tang dynasty and the study of Tang history, he manages to do systematic research on such Chinese cultural heritage as The Book of Songs, The Songs ofChu, The Book of Changes, The Works ofZhuang Zhou, The Works of Guan Zhong and A Collection of Folk Songs and Ballads, etc. and he also makes remarkable achievements in various fields of textual research , chronology, exegetic, textual criticism, catalogue, edition, discrimination study and philology. What he did leaves behind a large amount of precious cultural wealth and forcefully promotes the development of bibliography. Research on him in the past, however, mostly focus on his contribution in literature but seldom on that in bibliography. For this reason, this paper attempts to identify his status in modern academic history and the practical significance of research from the his aspects of his collating train of thought, his viewpoint and approach of documentary collation and his achieve meant.Different from others, Wen Yiduo began his research on Tang poetry with hypothetical "narrative", then collated and stipulated the chronological life of the poets and compiled their record of company and their works, which contributed not only to the development of chronology but also to the rectification and discrimination of the Tang poetry so as to lay the foundation for him to write objective and accurate criticalbiography of the Tang poets. This collating train of thought------ from abstract hypothesisto objective analysis, and finally to objective comprehension?梘oes through Wen Yiduo's scholarship. What follows Wen Yiduo's rectification of the Tang poetry is his research on the works of the Tang scholars and the Tang history, he compiled A Contemporary Catalogue of the Works by the Tang People and A Brief Survey of Books for Studing the Tang Dynasty. Both books are characterized with precise and appropriate examples and the fact that Wen Yiduo carried out rectification and collation of the cultural heritage through compiling catalogues displays his judicious judgement. This collating train of thought provides a creative mode of thinking for the development of bibliography. 'In his course of systematizing the ancient works in the Pre-Qin periods, Wen Yiduo evolved an entirely new viewpoint of collating the classical documentation, whose main points read as follows:First, put forward "three items" of documentary collation: correct the wrong words?-expound the meaning------clarify the background. Wen Yiduo gave a series of originalideas about edition and exegetical study in each aspect and altered the ?situation that traditional academy was handicapped by the backwardness of the first two aspects by skillfully settling their relations.Second, determine the testing criterion for documentary collation as a unity of the true, the good and the beautiful. According to Wen Yiduo , "the true" means to pursue the original meanings of the ancient works through rectification and in their historical perspective , etc. "the beautiful" means to investigate the style and content of the classical documentation from the angle of aesthetics and "the good" is to collate the classical documentation in a way that combines "its aim, its practicability and its effect" so as to make it useful through ages. This new criterion is a reliable measure for testing the development of bibliography.Third, make it clear that documentary collation is the basis of compiling literary history. In practice, Wen Yiduo himself collected data both vertically and horiiontally to compile the li...
