Phonological awareness, the conscious ability to detect and mainpulate sounds of language, is a part of metalinguistic awareness. The possible correlation between phonological awareness and reading acquisition and reading disability has led to a huge wave of research on phonological awareness, but which has also get so many problems by itself. The development study are the basis of the other studies on phonological awareness.This study has explored the characteristics and relationship of Chinese children's Chinese and English phonological awareness. Some primary students from rural area who has a later study on English language have been selected. By cross-sectional research, we analyze the characteristics of the development of pupil's Chinese and English phonological awareness, and the migratory relations, then we also compare our study with the previous researches.This study concluded theses as follows:A:Chinese phonological awareness of rural children have the same development with urban children's. From the second to the sixth grade, children have improved significantly in rhyme, tone, one-set and phoneme deletion, but the rates are different in different tasks.B:Rural children's English phonological awareness development level is lower than the urban ones', especially in phonemic awareness aspects (rime and phoneme counting), but they develop in similar way. The development order is syllable—onset and rime—phoneme as study obtained.C:Rural children's Chinese phonological awareness development level is much higher than English in any grade. But the difference quantity between Chinese and English phonological awareness is the same in different grades.D:The children from high-score group of Chinese phonological awareness,also have higher scores in English phonological awareness. However, the difference quantity of the high-low groups varies in different tasks and grades, which shows the migratory relations between the Chinese and English phonological awareness of the Chinese children.E:The correlation between Chinese and English phonological awareness is significant at 0.01. Chinese phonemic awareness task has highest correlation with all components of English phonological awareness. Three tasks of English phonological awareness can be reliably predicted from Chinese phonemic awareness, however, tone awareness has the lest affects, only to English one-set awareness.
