After the World Warâ…¡, with women's movements and the development of women's education, more and more women have started their academic profession in universities and colleges. Although a gradual increase in the number of female teachers, their professional development is still faced with various problems: research, teaching and social services are not in coordination and often result in a vicious cycle; incentive mechanism lacks of fairness; the narrow-minded discipline distribution and family responsibilities affect career development. In late 1980s, with the increase concern about the female teachers'professional development, some of the problems have been resolved or eased, but new problems gradually exposed: female teachers are facing a internal division tendency, therefore, the forces to strive for the interests of female teachers have been dispersed. In 1990s, the academic discrimination against women became recessive, which brought great challenge to female teacher's career development. For common interests, female teachers have started to cooperate again.In this paper, a career development planning will be given for female teachers in universities and colleges, by the analysis of the formation process of the problems mentioned above. Furthermore, suggestions and solutions will also be discussed from the perspectives of the government, universities, civil society, public opinion and the female teachers, hopefully to settle these problems.The thesis consists of five parts:The first section deals with the social background and the history of female teachers' career development in American universities and colleges.The second part sums up the historical features and problems of female teachers'career development by the adoption of comparative approach.The third part of the document describes how the factors impact female teacher's career in American Universities and colleges with analysis method.The fourth part is about the solutions to improve the women teachers'career development:advance the supporting policies from the government and universities; enhance the cooperation between female teachers and civil society organizations; take advantage of the public supportive opinion, as well as improve female teacher's career skills and awareness of benefits they should enjoy, based on which the author gives a career development planning for the female faculties.Based on the former analysis, the last part of the thesis summarizes the female teachers'professional development problems, and discusses the countermeasures should be taken in the future.
