It's known that reading can enhance student's civilized accomplishment. Due to the time and space limitations in the school, after-school reading has become a very important method to expand the students' knowledge, to promote their spiritual awareness, and to raise their humanity accomplishment.What is the current status of the after-class reading in the high schools? What are the students' reading conditions, reading interests and reading attitudes? What kind of help do they need for their after-class reading? These issues must be understood well for every teacher who will give the reading instruction to the students.Therefore, for the purpose of doing some fundamental work of the after-class reading, the author has done the investigation of the after-class reading in No.1 Railway Middle School. The investigation began with a questionnaire and a pre-study reading test, which serve as"baseline data". After the investigation, the synthesis statistics result has been analyzed, the root causes have been studied and the corresponding countermeasures have been made. After a term's experiment, , a post-study reading test was carried out and a comparison was made.The Answers to the research questions showed that after-class reading aroused the students'interests towards reading and was effective in enhancing middle school overall reading proficiency and reading speed. The interview after the study revealed that students took positive attitudes towards the after-class reading ,indicating that such training activities can be used in high school classroom.The research in this dissertation tried to explore a more effective approach to developing after-class reading. In spite of its limitations, the study can act as an attempt and encouragement for peers to be aware of the importance of after-class reading. the author wishes those experience and methods will be valuable for the following study.
