It's known that reading can enhance student's civilized accomplishment. Due to the time and space limitations in the school, after-school reading has become a very important method to expand the students' knowledge, to promote their spiritual awareness, and to raise their humanity accomplishment.What is the current status of the after-school reading in the high schools, particularly the ones in the small cities which lack cultural facilities? What are the students' reading conditions, reading interests and reading attitudes? What kind of help do they need for their after-school reading? These issues must be understood well for every teacher who will give the reading instruction to the students. Therefore, for the purpose of doing some fundamental work of the after-school reading, the author has done the investigation of the after-school reading in 5 high schools in Lengshuijiang city of Hunan province.After the investigation, the synthesis statistics result has been analyzed, the root causes have been studied and the corresponding countermeasures have been made. After one year's after-school reading experiment and its analysis, the author wishes those experience and methods will be valuable for the following study.This paper has 6 sections:1. The current status of the after-school reading study in China and abroad and the brief introduction of this thesis.2. Literature review of the after-school reading. In this section first the definition of the reading, the relationship between the in-school reading and after-school reading and the importance and the necessity of the study of the after-school reading, then introduced the related research of some scholars and teaching workers civil and abroad.3. This section depicts the goals and meaning of the study of the after-school reading.4. & 5 These two sections are the important parts of this thesis. All the currentstatus, collected data and analysis, discussion and the corresponding countermeasure of the after-school reading are in these 2 sections. And including the procedure of one year experiment of the related corresponding countermove.6. The conclusion and the future research direction. The last part of this thesis is the reconsidering for this study.The Reconsideration of the study can help us find some areas which need improvements; this will be helpful for the future study.
