With the globalization of the world economy and frequent international cooperation, English has become a very important tool in communication. To improve the students' oral English ability has become an increasing need of our society. However, due to various reasons, oral English teaching in senior high schools has often been neglected. The focus of language teaching has been on linguistic knowledge, and little attention has been given to the actual use of language. Consequently, students' oral English ability is poor.To arouse students' interests of learning oral English and enable students to communicate in English successfully, the author aims at exploring effective ways in oral English teaching in senior high schools. This study focuses on the design of oral workshop both in and after class.The present thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter One begins with the current status of oral English teaching in senior high schools. By studying the results of questionnaire, the author analyses the causes of students' poor oral ability from the aspects of students, teachers and the environment. Chapter Two reviews the theories in relation to this study. It mainly refers to the development of oral English teaching and the factors which affect the students' oral English development. It also focuses on Communicative Approach and Task-based Language Teaching. Chapter Three presents the strategies of oral English teaching in senior high schools. The author discusses the aims and sums up the principles of oral English teaching. In practicing oral English, students are suggested to take account of accuracy, appropriateness and fluency. To improve students' oral ability, teachers should focus on arousing students' interests and try to build a better learning environment. Chapter Four is the experimental design and process of oral English teaching. Directed by the Communicative Approach, oral English teaching is integrated into the English teaching in senior high schools. The author makes the most of the textbooks and applies Task-based Language Teaching to oral English classes. Meanwhile, the author proposes a variety of oral workshop for effective teaching of oral English, including teaching social formulas, retelling, discussion, acting role-plays, and playing games. The thesis ends with the conclusion of the research and the existing problems as well as some suggestions to the related subject.
