Interpretation of Hu Shih's Educational Thought in Autobiography at 40Hu Shih wrote Autobiography at 40 to look back his lifetimes. When he was young, he received the family school education in his hometown and later had the new education during his adolescence in Shanghai.Autobiography at 40 gives a detail account of these educational experiences. And for this reason, while Autobiography at 40 is regarded as precisely historical narrative text,it's also the educational narration that reflects the national pedagogical phenomenon and individual educational experiences. This paper interprets the text in the perspective of pedagogy.Autobiography at 40 concentrates Hu Shih's educational experiences on three ways: family education, reading and his association with teachers and friends.Through the description of these,Autobiography at 40 expresses Hu Shih's ideas in dominant or recessive ways.It shows that family expectation leads to personal progress, family culture shapes personal cultural characteristic, family origin gives birth to personal academic thinking, and family education lays a solid foundation for personal achievement.Describing thoroughly how to choose and read books and how great these books influenced Hu Shih,Autobiography at 40 expresses the critical importance of reading.Books who choose determine the tendency of his learning and life, reading ways influence the outcome of knowledge accumulation, and reading should be the cause and leisure throughout one's life.Utilizing a large amount of text information, Autobiography at 40 narrates Hu Shih's teachers in deep affecting words to show his thought about the acquisition of academic tradition. As a link of the mentor-disciple chain, teacher carries and spreads influence.Learners who enter the mentor-disciple chain understand and respect their teachers, then follow, surpass them. Finally they achieve their personal achievement and realize the tradition of scholarship from generation to another. Recalling his lifetimes before forty years old,Hu Shih owed his achievements to family education which he got, books which he read and teachers who he was in contact with.In Hu Shih's opinion, these are the important three elements to personal achievement. That is the very educational thought in Autobiography at 40.
