Hu Shih's thought of academic freedom are constituted systematically.It include why need academic freedom and how guarantee academic freedom. Firstly, academic freedom is intrinsic demands of knowledge, any knowledge may be tainted with error, we only give scholars academic freedom to develop knowledge. Students are potential scholars. Only in the case of freedom of learning, they can freely study and think. Because students are immature scholars , freedom of learning is mainly reflected in the freedom of teaching.When we give scholars and students academic freedom, society can develop and progress. Secondly, in order to protect the proper use of academic freedom, scholars must have a rich appreciation and independent personality, and they should use scientific methods to research scholarship and publish responsible comments.of course, academic freedom is only guaranteed by constitution , we can protect the academic freedom of scholars.Hu Shih's practice of academic freedom under the guidance of thought of academic freedom is useful for refrence. Except to advocated speech freedom in newspaper and periodical which greatly liberated the young's brain. Hu Shih practiced academic freedom as a new teacher and a choolmaster. He raised a point of advices about innovating upon Beijing University , the president of Cai -Yuan-Pei accepted his suggestion and put in practice.In 1928, Hu Shi was invited application for a schoolmaster of the public college in china. He accordingly reformed from managing the college to choosing scholars,all of these adequately practiced his academic freedom. In 1930-1931, the case of Long-Long-Gi happened,Hu Shih not only carefully expatiated on his idea of academic freedom,but also he made great efforts to protect it. In 1945, Hu Shih was appointed the principal of Beijing University, he aimed for realizing china's academic independence and freedom.In these stages, based on its own role and the college established conditions, Hu Shih practiced academic freedom in different social environment.In a vord , Hu Shih's thought and practice of academic freedom is useful for theory and reality.
