It is both important and difficult to teach the classical Chinese language. According to the standards of the New Curriculum,the teaching of the classical Chinese language has been adjusted:a)The proportion of the classical language in the textbook is increased to 40%from the previous 20%; b)Emphasis has been placed on reading aloud in learning of the classical language.In the New Curriculum,it is stipulated that there is a set number of texts to be recited.More and more importance has been attached to the teaching of the classical language,but the traditional teaching method is rather inflexible.As usual,the teacher reads the text word by word and the students passively listen,thus the lecture being rather dull.Such is the case that the teacher is laborious,the student is tiresome,the lecture is fruitless, and the result is unsatisfactory.So,according to the standards of the New Curriculum,in connection with the characteristics of the classical language, and on the basis of Babanski's theory of optional courses,this paper makes an effort to study the application of the strategy of cooperative learning to teaching of the classical language for juniour students,and to reserch the role of the teacher in applying the approach.In the 7-9th grade of the compulsory education,it is quite suitable for the students to learn cooperatively,for it is based on the junior students'development of psychology.During this period,students need to practise cooperation in their study accommodating themselves psychologically to promote the effeciency so as to prepare for the future life.Based upon the characteristics of the classical Chinese language and the development of the students'psychology,it is fairly useful to practise cooperative learning,which will arouse students'interest in learning and reading in classical Chinese language,and which will accordingly accustom students to the cultural tradition and thinking,thus physically and psychologically developing healthily.There are many types of cooperative learning in teaching the clasical Chinese language,which can be devided according to the teaching cycle into several stages and which can also appear as several forms,such as instruction, discussion,acting or interaction.On basis of the teaching materal published by the Peaple Education Press and in consideration of the characterisrics of junior students,this paper aims to disccus the practical approach of cooperative learning in the classical Chines language teaching in combination of the teaching periods,synthetical methods and teaching cycle.
