In this study,the main research object is the work of teacher education institutions in Shanghai from 1978 to 2008.This paper reveals the changes in work of teacher education from general to individual.Based on the historical facts,this study summarizes several features of teacher education institutions' work in different historical periods.This study chooses two outstanding institutions,researches them deeply and finds out the key factors of their achievements.The special position and the close contact between teacher education institutions and basic education is this study's concern.Through historical materials,we can know that teacher education institutions in Shanghai established in the latter half of the 20th century,at that time,the main work of them was to help teachers master texts and teaching skills.During recent 30 years, all the teacher education institutions in Shanghai have passed the following stages:rehabilitation and reconstruction,remedial training,the rapid expansion of departments,exploration of the continuing education and comprehensive transition in the new century .They have achieved many changes,such as the change from teacher training, teaching and research only to teaching and research, research, training,modern education technology as a whole; from the fragmentation of the sectors to break down departmental constraints; from the upper combination of theory and practice to the combination of theory and practice in the grass-roots units.Qingpu teacher education institution and Jing'an teacher education institution have good reputation.The characteristic of the former is precedence of scientific research,the characteristic of the latter is basing on its affiliated school,it takes root in practice,leads curriculum revolution.The preeminence of the two bodies is linked with a number of names,the former is the mathematics education reform group with Gu ling yuan at the core, the latter is its predecessor president Zhang renli,so leaders are important to organizations.We can see that during 30 years, the concept of services remains unchanged.With the scientific theory as a guide, basing on practice is teacher education institutions' lifeline.
