Since it was proposed in the newly published National English Curriculum Standards in 2001, task-based English teaching (TBLT) has become one of the research focuses in the educational circles. TBLT approach focuses on meaning rather than on linguistic structure. Learners will acquire the target language by doing a task, during which period they will construct a meaningful structure with the target language. This is an effective way for learners to acquire the target language and improve communicative skills. On the other hand, the traditional English teaching method in China, which is influenced by test-oriented education, focuses on linguistic structure much more than on comprehensive language ability. Theoretically, TBLT is more appropriate than the traditional method for to acquiring the target language. However, TBLT is from abroad and designed for TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language). We have a very different language environment in China. The implementation of TBLT will be also affected by some other facts, such as teachers'capability and students'language skills, and the pressure to get into college, etc. There are good opportunities as well as problems and difficulties when TBLT is carried out. So I designed two questionnaires for both teachers and students based on the classroom observation and literature review on TBLT at home and abroad, in order to research the adaptability of the TBLT approach in senior high school. The whole thesis consists of 7 parts. Chapter one is an introduction of the significance of the study, and the current research situation of TBLT at home and abroad. Chapter two is the literature review of the background and theoretical basis of TBLT. Chapter three discusses the English language study environment in China and the current situation after the implementation of the TBLT. Chapter four is a research on the adaptability of the TBLT approach in senior high school. Chapter five is the analysis of the research. Chapter six is the discussion and comments on TBLT based on the research. The last chapter is the conclusion. |
