A Research On Carrying Out Of TBLT In Senior English In Wuzhou, Guangxi

At present, a new curriculum reform is being carried out in China and a complete curriculum reform in compulsory education will be widely put into effect in 2005. Of course, senior English is not an exception. The new English Curriculum Standard which is being carried out or experimented, highly advocates the use of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT), so the adoption of TBLT in senior schools is absolutely a matter of great significance. But what's the actual situation in the implementation of TBLT ? In order to find out what's actually going on in English teaching in senior schools, the author, based on TBLT theory including its definition, components, characters and classification, conducted a research in the senior schools in Wuzhou. As the sample, the author chose 59 teachers of Grade One from 17 high schools in Wuzhou City and the counties ( Cenxi, Cangwu, Tengxian and Mengshan) attached to it. The investigation was made by means of questionnaire and interview. The research involves the idea, quality of teachers, the actual implementation of TBLT and its necessity. The result of the research shows: among the English teachers of Senior One in Wuzhou and its four neighbouring counties, 92 percent of the teachers under investigation consider it a good teaching model. However, it is a pity that only 22% of the teachers think they can use TBLT in classroom teaching. Why?On the analysis based on the investigation, the author finds that the main reasons why so many teachers fail to use TBLT are these: first, TBLT needs teachers with high skills. Many teachers find it too hard to use it; second, some teachers can not apply it in a proper manner and when they find they can not obtain the expected result, they give it up; third, the assessment system and the NMET do not match the assessment system of TBLT; fourth, the teachers haven't received any training and experts' guide before and during the course. In addition, the lacking of teaching facilities is also an important reason.In order to carry out TBLT successfully, the author suggests that the present assessment system should be renovated and transformed to meet the requirements of TBLT and that more TBLT training programs and experiments should be conducted under the guidance of experts. Only by doing so, can we really and fully carrying out TBLT in middle schools.
