| In recent years, theories of cross-cultural communication have been constantly applied to teaching of English language and have produced encouraging results. This thesis analyses the present situation of vocabulary teaching in senior high schools and points out the necessity of integrating culture knowledge to vocabulary teaching. After a year's experimental research, it is proved that introducing culture to vocabulary teaching is not only necessary, but also possible. In addition, relevant methods and its effects are tested. Based on the research, the following conclusions are made:1) The input of culture in vocabulary teaching can improve the students' communicative competence;2) The input of culture in vocabulary teaching can help improve the students' English proficiency in general;3) The comparative approach can be adopted to input culture into Englishteaching in senior high schools.This thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter One focuses on the present situation of vocabulary teaching in senior high schools and the requirements of the New Curriculum. Chapter Two discusses the relationship between culture and language and traces down the influence of cross-cultural communication on language teaching. According to the analysis above, Chapter Three puts forward the view that it is significant to combine vocabulary teaching with cross-cultural communication. Being a very important part of language, vocabulary has rich loads of cultural information. Therefore, it is of vital importance to input culture in vocabulary teaching. Chapter Four deals with the experimental research on the input of culture in vocabulary teaching, which took place in a senior high school of Suzhou. Chapter Five analyses the results of the research and proves the necessity of inputting culture in vocabulary teaching in senior high schools because it can not only improve the students' English proficiency by enhancing the students' interest in learning English but also improve the students' communicative competence. The last chapter concludes the research, pointing out some unsolved problems and putting forward some suggestions for future research. |
