In language teaching, the ability to summarize is one of the basic capacity.It refers to being able to analyse the article to find out the central point,to analyse the structure of the article, to get the author's viewpoint and attitude and then express the meaning of the content accurately in brief.Its mental ability consists of three parts: the feelings(to capture the first impression), understanding (to understand the content hierarchically through the decomposition of the article as a whole), and an integrated to joint the various parts of the decomposition and state on the basis of the feelings and understanding.In language teaching,such a ability is very important.In learning process, students with strong ability to summarize will do better in understanding, receiving, feeling and appreciating. Previous language examination outlines all involved the ability. Therefore, we must strengthen the teaching of the development of students' summarizing ability.However, there is a lot of students lacking in it. Their problems exist in the following aspects: they can not grasp the key information, but quote the original sentences to summarize; the general idea they have summarized is not deep enough and isn't close to the main content; they can not understand the article as a whole, and as a result they can only summarize part of the content; they are short of comprehensive analysing ability, and can not make further analysis to find the organic link between the paragraphs.There are three most fundamental ways to improve students' summarizing ability: first, train their capacity in the course of reading by updating the concept of education, changing teaching methods, and emphasising teaching of reading; second, depend on classroom teaching to learn about the structures of the types and summarize different-type articles in different ways; third, improve the ability through special training.
