Along with the society development, the application of mathimetical calculation plays a more and more important role in all walks of life. The 21st century being an information and digitalized age characterized by global economic competition, having certain calculating ability becomes an elementary mathematical caliber for the modern people. The mathematical calculation penetrating throughout the elementary mathematical teaching plays an important role in developing the number sense of students, improving thinking faculty of students, and fostering the mathematical thinking ability, exploring and innovative abilities of students, that reflects one of the important characters of so-called essential-qualities-oriented schooling. However, it is found in the investigation and research that the status quo of the elementary students' calculating ability is not so satisfactory and problems exist, for instance, big differences in calculating interests among students. Therefore, the writer in this thesis tries to find out the concrete causes bringing problems to the calculating ability of elementary students through investigating and analyzing the status quo of elementary students' calculating ability and analyzing the elements influencing the students' calculating ability. At the same time, some personal opinions will be put forward aiming at those causes in a bid to help the elementary students actually improve their calculating ability.This thesis consists of five parts. Part 1 Introduction: In the first place, anxiety and doubt about the problem that the elementary students' calculating ability is not so satisfactory is to be presented. Subsequently, importance of researching the problem will be elaborated from the aspects of social development and mathematics course demands and specific requirements of the New Curriculum Standards.Part 2 Literature Review: Connotation and composition of the calculating ability will be explained in detail, and the trends and achievements of the elementary students' calculating ability researching is to be evaluated.Part 3 Status-Quo Investigation of Calculating Ability of Elementary Students and Analysis of its Causes: By means of investigating and analyzing the status quo of the elementary students' calculating ability, problems in the calculating ability of elementary students is to be still found, such as decline of calculating accuracy rate and slow oral calculation.Then, the causes affecting the students' calculating ability are to be further investigated and analyzed. With analysis, the two main causes affecting the students' calculating ability are to be found, i.e., one is teachers' wrong understanding the arithmetical teaching requirements of the New Curriculum Standards; the other is the elementary students' psychological characteristics. In addition, the two students showing good calculating ability in the investigation last time will be individually studied and meanwhile the reason bringing them good calculating ability is to be found. Part 4 Concrete Counterplans for Improving Elementary Students' Calculating ability: It is the key of this thesis, and in this part, concrete counterplans are brought forward to enhance the elementary students' calculating ability. From the aspect of grasping the arithmetic knowledge and skill, strengthening the oral calculation lays the foundation, the calculating principles and calculating orders are to be explained clearly and emphatically, the students' sense of simple calculation is to be also cultivated, and well-designed exercises will be the key in improving the students' calculating ability; from the aspect of the arithmetical psychology and habit, emphatically fostering the students' calculating interest is prerequisite to the improvement of the students' calculating ability, and helping students form a good calculating habit is also a guarantee for it. Additionally, several new problems in the arithmetical teaching are also explained in detail; those problems are expected to be solved by elementary teachers so as to further improve the students' calculating ability. For research, in this part we twice parktake in the calculation study of some student that cannot smoothly make the minus calculation at the level of grade one. The whole course is recorded and analyzed in detail and a conclusion is made in the end, laying a practical foundation for the research in this thesis.Part 5 Conclusion and Rethinking.
