Research On Impoverished College Students' Self Help

Since 1987, the government has working for building a relatively successful system of polices to subsidize students in impoverished financial conditions. The administration and universities pay attention to the problem of subsidizing impoverished students in universities, and have drafted a series of polices and measures, such as scholarship,stipend,subsidy,reducing or exempting tuitions,work-study programs, and so on, which have developed into a huge and unified subsidization system composed of scholarship, student loans, work-study programs, subsidies, and full or partial exemption of tuition.However, with the further advancing of system reforms with enrolling and charging, the impoverished students in universities will continue to increase by year. The mission of subsidizing impoverished students will be heavier. As a result, the government and the institutions have more and more pressure. They have contributed to give impoverished student more subsidies by enlarging the allocation of funds for aiding the impoverished and accept social donations, etc. But it is far from sufficient to solve the problem by national polices and social donations. Guiding the impoverished college students to make use of their own advantages to self-help and self-saving, is the basic approach to solving the problem.This paper has used the survey and cases-studies, the method of combining quantitative and qualitative information obtained in the investigation , to analyze the status of impoverished students' self help. The investigation shows, most impoverished students have strong help-self consciousness. Aiding as the form of introducing and arranging a part-time job is the most acceptable form of subsidizing. Impoverished college students' approaches of self-help include: receiving scholarship through excellent achievement, gaining rewards by taking part in work-study programs and applying for a student loan, and so on.The thesis carries out thorough investigation on the impoverished students' condition of receiving scholarship, the channels and approaches of taking a part-time job while studying. The investigation shows, there are many problems in impoverished students' self-help, including: being difficult to gain greater-amount scholarship, lack of the chances of taking a part-time job and long term behavior, harmonizing the relation among taking a part-time job , study and other activities. There are two reasons for this, one from the environment, the other from impoverished student themselves. The latter is really the crux of the matter. In order to solve the problems, the paper has put forward some proposals to impoverished students, the policies makers, school administrators and people dealing with students affair. At last, we should give particular consideration to female students in impoverished conditions.
