This thesis tries to analyze the structure of meaning-symbols and the phonetic-symbols in the Chinese pictophonetic characters. There comes regularity which will help us to understand deeply the Chinese pictophonetic characters, and to improve the methods of teaching, simplifying and standardizing the Chinese characters.Pictophonetic characters, which are constructed with the phonetic-symbols and the meaning-symbols, are the main parts of the Chinese characters. It is a very advantageous way to create a character by combination a meaning-symbol and a phonetic- symbol, because it can show not only the meaning but also the pronunciation of the character. Consequently, the Chinese characters will exist permanently in this planet.Pictophonetic characters is an essential part in the class of Teaching Chinese in the primary and middle school. And it is also an important factor in enhancing and evaluating teaching quality for the Chinese education. As we known that Chinese character' peculiarities in reading, writing and recognizing make the relationships between Chinese phonology, lexicon and grammar intricate, which makes the teaching of Pictophonetic characters becoming one of the trickiest works for Chinese educators. But Chinese Teachers and researchers are clear that the research on Pictophonetic characters' teaching is very important to the whole development of the field. Researchers have made great efforts on the analysis of Pictophonetic characters' teaching materials. An overall research is needed.In recent years, scholars have gone about making researches on Teaching of Chinese as Foreign Language. Therefore, it is accepted that textbooks of Chinese character teaching published in China have been chosen as materials to analyze their contents, ranging from Chinese characters, character knowledge and their teaching methods, to the designing of practice. Also a great abundance of unbiased and objective statistics is included in the research, whose analysis presents deficiencies in the prevailing teaching materials. On that basis, the author proposes his unique understanding on making out teaching target of Chinese as Foreign Language, designing teaching syllabus, and promote the developmental trend of Teaching of Chinese as Foreign Language by the phonetic loaning of ancient characters. Since the meaning- symbols taken shape, it became the tools categorizing the Chinese characters, and taking the leading role in the structure of the pictophonetic characters.
