| Understanding between teachers and students is usually considered essential to build a good teacher-student relationship, to carry out educational and teaching activities smoothly and to improve teaching quality. In practice, most teachers and students believe that they can accurately understand the other side and grasp the teacher-student relationship or they have done this. But in fact, great cognitional differences have been shown between teachers and students.Questionnaires and observation were mainly occupied to study the mutual understanding between teachers and students in two vocational schools. The causes of the cognitional differences are analyzed in this study and some suggestions are offered on how to improve the mutual understanding between teachers and students. The result shows that cognitional differences do exist between teachers and students. On ability and attitudes, both teachers and students think more highly of their own than of the other side's. Moreover, there's a huge gap. On the teacher-student relationship, teachers are more positive than students. On willingness to communicate with each other, teachers are stronger than students although they both are not strong enough. The cognitional differences between teachers and students result from many factors mainly including psychological and institutional ones. In order to minimize the cognitional differences, both teachers and students are supposed to endeavor to know oneself correctly, to know others correctly, to know the group correctly, and to look for the causes accurately. All these are challenging to both teachers and students. Firstly, teachers and students should have an idea that the cognitional differences are objective. Secondly, conditions for good communications between teachers and students should be created through institution construction. Lastly, some necessary psychological training should be provided to avoid certain negative psychological influences.Restricted by time and expenditure, the author couldn't get large investigation samples. On the causes of cognitional differences, some individual interviews were carried out but not systematically. These two problems in this essay are to be solved through further study. |
