This thesis is composed of three parts. The first part analyses the idea of popular culture, which came into being in high-developed industrial society. Its target consumers are city dwellers who are reached via popular media and it is produced according to market rules. Based on popular culture phenomenon, this part concludes the features of popular culture and its influences on people in terms of cultural, economic, political point of view.The second part focuses on both positive and negative effects of popular culture on middle school students. It influences students positively in four aspects: first of all, its casual and easy style encourages the political education of students. Secondly, its profoud cultrual foundation plays a vital role in cultivating humanistic spirits of students. Thirdly, popular culture emphasizes on equality, which aids the building of students' personalities. Forthly, it keeps close pace with the development of society, so it encourages students to innovate. On the other hand, it misleads students to adore money and material and entices them to indulge in creature comforts. It also propogandizes fatalism, which hinders their way to self-improvement. What's worse, students are easily influenced by its thinking mode, thus it jeopardizes their exploration of the world.The last part discusses the relationship between popular culture and the building of students' personalities. Firstly, it analyses the idea of personnality and healthy personality in a scientific way. It divides personality disturbances into different types and explains its causes of formation. To build a healthy personality, this thesis brings forward three principles, guiding principal, moderation principal, and self-discipline and heteronomy principal. What's more, it puts forward some measurements that schools should take to help students to build healthy personalities. First and foremost, schools should give systematic educaion on the building of healthy personalities, and watch students' personality health closely. Secondly, educaion of humane studies and social science is also needed to raise students' cultual awareness. Last but not least, schools should combine class teaching and outdoor activities, which widens the road to build healthy personalities of students. Anyhow, students themselves can not shun their own responsibilities to build healthy personalities, so appropriate and effective methods are dispensable while methods such as self-correction, self-promotion and self-ananlysis as well as consistance of knowledge and behavior, self-criticism and handling affairs in a cautious way are all recommendable.To end this thesis, the author expresses his keen hope and confidence in suceeding to help students build healthy personalities.
