Over the past 50 years, language learning research has shifted its attention from the teacher to the student, from teaching to learning, for people engaged in language learning have come to understand that language acquisition is a cognitive process in which the factors of the language learner himself play a decisive role in the successful mastery of a foreign language. Therefore, the study of how language learners process the new language information, how they understand, tackle and retain the input with the learning strategy in learning a foreign language has become a hot topic in ELT. As vocabulary is an essential component for language building, the role it plays in the successful acquisition of a foreign language is becoming more and more important. Therefore, vocabulary learning has become an important aspect of language learning study.Based on an investigation of the English vocabulary learning strategies of high school students, this thesis analyzes how high school students learn and use vocabulary, studies the correlation between strategies and vocabulary test results, and stresses adequately the significance of English vocabulary learning strategies while emphasizing the role played by the teacher during the whole process. The paper also argues that the teacher should help the high school students to form the conception of learning English well by employing correct vocabulary learning strategies, and to get into a good habit of applying learning strategies step by step. Meanwhile, the teacher, proceeding in the actual conditions, should instruct the students how to use vocabulary learning strategies, foster their learning habits and enlarge their vocabulary so as to get the communication competence. Finally, the thesis offers some tentative plans and suggestions for the improvement of our high school English teaching and learning.
