The Formation And Character Of Western University Concept And Its Inspiration To The Development Of The Universities In China

Since the 1990s, a hot wave of studying universities has appeared in the area of higher learning, and people's focuses don't lessen with the time passing by. The reason for this is varied. On the one hand, with our country's opening to the outside world, the economy boosts, and people's living conditions are rising as well, which needs universities to foster high-quality people for the society; on the other hand, the arrival of globalization has put universities into the crisis of legal existence, and offered good opportunities of development as well. The society has more demands for the university, while university is trapped in the trouble of marketing and commercialization. Out universities are going towards practicability. In meeting the needs of generalization, marketing, and commercialization of higher learning, our universities have become the factory of producing diplomas and specialized workers. Thus, they become slaves of the market. Its self-value is lost, so, studying universities and the concept has become the impressive need and option for the reform and development of universities.This thesis, based on the analysis of idea, education idea, university and its concepts, focuses on the process of evolution of western universities from the angle of history, and divides it into four periods. It chooses 8 outstanding people to study and analyses their ideas respectively. Through the study, we find that university concepts under different countries, politics, cultures and economy present different characteristics and traditions. These are helpful to the development of our universities.At the same time, this article goes over the development of university concept in our country, analyses its 4 periods from ancient time to modern society. Our university concept is influenced by traditional culture and politics, and it was lost for a long time. Now, it is faced with the crisis of marketing and reconstruction of value.Through human education, academic freedom and university function, this papermakes comparison and contrast between China and western university concepts,producing 5 points: 1.to foster "human" is the basis of the concept.2.academic freedom is the soul of the concept. 3. outstanding president is the key of the concept. 4. culture and tradition are the soil for the concept. 5. communication is the premise of the concept.
