Abstract/Summary:
Parental education beliefs are the key factors to the quality of parental education.Parents' idea on the education of mathematics is crucial to the development ofchildren's mathematics ability. This study aims to analyze the present situation ofparents' idea on the education of mathematics, and the relationship betweenchildren's number concept's development and parents' idea.One hundred and fifteen-three preschool children who came from twokindergartens in Guangzhou and their parents were chosen as research objects byCluster Random Sampling. Questionnaire is designed to gather the information aboutparents' idea on preschool children's mathematics, while children's number conceptsscale is used to measure the development level of children's number concept.Descriptive analysis, analysis of variance and regression analysis are used to revealthe relationship between present parents' idea on mathematics and children's numberconcept's development.The results of the study show that:1) Parents' ideas on mathematic education are good on the whole level, butshow some problems in the mean time, such as some parents don't fullyunderstand the learning content of mathematics in family situation; andparents are not confident with their own ability on coaching children aboutmathematics.2) The parents' idea on mathematics under the diverse parents' educationallevel, capacity and family incomes respectively shows no significantdifference.3) There is no significant difference on parents' ideas on mathematics in termsof the children's gender.4) There is significant difference on parents' ideas on mathematics amongdifferent number concept development level groups. 5) There is significant correlation between parents' ideas on mathematicseducation and children's number concept development level.6) There is no significant correlation between parents' belief on thedevelopment of children's mathematics ability and children's numberconcept development.7) There is significant correlation between parents' belief on the expectationof children's mathematics learning and children's number conceptdevelopment.8) There is significant correlation between parents' belief on mathematicseducation and children's number concept development.9) Parents' belief on mathematics education is the most important influence ofthe development of children's number concept.Finally, suggestions are given to the family mathematic education according tothe research findings.
