In the National Teaching Curriculum of Physical Education Course in High Institution issued by National Ministry of Education in August, 1992,it is stipulated that the P.E elective courses should be offered n universities and colleges, by taking which students are able to select one sport item after considering their own interest and strong point and get specific training. The P.E elective course now can be taken by 2nd grade students and has become one of the distinguishing features in college P.E teaching field for it satisfies the various needs of students and arouses their interest in sports and thus has gained great popularity among them. However, the problem existing now is that the teaching evaluation patterns remain traditional and unchanged with ultimate purpose of checking students'mastering of basic knowledge and skills. The old evaluation patterns do not take into consideration students' learning attitude, sports habits, affective state and team work spirit, which makes the students having good physical fitness achieve high in the course while the other students who do not score low. The old evaluation system deflates students'self-confidence and self-esteem and discourages them from taking part in more sports activities, making it hard to achieve the final goal of "life-long physical education". Considering all the above mentioned, we find it of great urgency and necessity to reform the current evaluation system of college P.E elective courses. The research takes 120 students and 30 P.E teachers as its subjects and studies the evaluation systems in P.E elective courses by reviewing relevant literature and doing investigation and data analysis. The findings of the research reveal several points: first, the establishment of the new evaluation system is of theoretical and practical significance. Second, the new system is more reasonable and concerning bout individuals with more physical and psychological aspects covered, which both benefits teachers in their instruction and assessment of the students' performance and leads the students to the all-round progress. Third, it is embodied in the research that students should be the centre of the classroom and teachers can improve the teaching quality by bettering their teaching methods. Regarding the inadequate time, there still exist some problems and inadequacy in the research. To sum up, the research is meaningful in that it has made an attempt to make improvement of the current evaluation system and promote the teaching reform in college physical education.
