The Leadership Structure Of College Student Leaders

With the development of social economics, it is known that the prominent leaders can improve more of the productivity, so more and more studies on leadership have appeared. Most of the studies already existent are concentrated on the leaders in Party and government administration or enterprise. The developing society needs people to make themselves better. Warren G. Bennis, the authority of leadership area had said that everybody should have the leadership. College students are the most important power and fresh troops for our social construction. The student leaders are a special group in college, their ability can affect the effect of teaching and administration. As student managers, their leadership is necessary for their work. In this study, we used the methods of Semi-structured Interview, Open-ended Questionnaire, Exploratory Factor Analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, and 360 degree Ratings to explore the leadership structure of college student leaders. We found that:Firstly, the structure of leadership of college student leaders includes four dimensions. Arranged in descending order of importance to the questionnaire are: 1) the ability of information processing; 2) the ability of task execution; 3) cooperative competence; 4) the ability of communication and organization. The ability of information processing means that whether the student leaders can accept new information, form their own views, and transmit information well. The ability of task execution means whether the student leaders can establish the object of organization and formulate the plan, discuss the value of their task and make sure that the task can be completed. Cooperative competence means that whether the student leaders have cooperative spirit and cooperative skills, and whether they can accept different views. The ability of communication and organization means whether the student leaders can deal with the correlation within or between the organizations, and deal with every problem.Secondly, multiple differences in sex, degree, major, positions have been found on each dimension's score and the total score. In sex, female student leaders got higher score than male student leaders in dimension of cooperative competence. In degree, frosh student leaders got higher score than sophomore and junior in dimension of the ability of communication and organization. In major, science student leaders got higher score than arts and other major student leaders in dimension of the ability of information processing; arts and science student leaders got higher score than engineering course and other major student leaders in dimension of the ability of task execution; arts student leaders got higher score than science and engineering course student leasers in dimension of cooperative competence. In position sort, student union and association and other sort of student leaders got higher score than class and degree student leaders in dimension of the ability of information processing.
