The compensation system of American faculty is concise in frame view. The main characterof the compensation system is its basic compensation, which dominates the whole compensation.The compensation system is definitely affected by academic rank, type of university, proportionof teaching and research affairs, the public-private difference and also, the gender difference. Inthe recent years, the changing of occupation mix and collective bargaining in higher educationare the new trends to affect university compensation system. The compensation level ofAmerican faculty has significant advantage when it compare with either middle class family' orAmerican secondary and elementary teachers'. Despite the average compensation of Americanfaculty is only about 70% of their colleagues' who working outside higher education system,American universities have adopted a special policy which standard is meet or above the marketcompensation standard to employ some qualified faculty who are in high market needs field.Thus at the largest extension, this compensation policy ensure American universities have morecompetitive in external to hire highly qualified faculty. In the view of compensation paymentsystem, the Contract Salary System CSS and Single Salary Schedule SSS are the main two salarypayment systems in American higher education system, this two salary payment system reflectfrom different point of view the difference value judgment in American higher educationcompensation system. In the meanwhile, the American faculty compensation managementmainly based on the management of faculty classification, that is, different types of facultycorrespond to different compensation. This rule plays an important role in decline the cost ofAmerican university teaching. In the raises mechanism of compensation, merit pay andachievement pay are the main modalities in inner environment, outside the universities, thenational economic condition, the status of higher education and the social price index are allaffect factors.Generally, the outer competition and inner flexibility of American higher educationcompensation system provide an important systematic guarantee to the quality of Americanuniversity faculty.
