Recently in China, raising by the grandparents has become a common social phenomenon. Usually when parents can't take care of their children by themselves, grandparents would give them a hand. But because of social environment, values and other differences between grandparents and parents, it must result in different family education methods, which would have some impacts on children. Different family education methods would lead to different family communication patterns, which would affect children's consumption abilities.This paper tries to verify the impacts of family communication to children's consumption abilities, and discuss the family communication patterns, children's consumption abilities differences between families raising by grandparents and raising by parents.This research selected children aged 7 to 13 and their fosters as research object. We distributed 350 pieces of questionnaires in two primary schools which in the author's hometown by means of convenient sampling, and 264 valid samples were returned. The model was tested and analyzed by SPSS13.0 software package and found several main results: (1) verifying and discussing several dimensions of family communication patterns and children's consumption abilities; (2) concept-orientation and the age of child have positive effects on child's influence and child's independence; socio-orientation has negative effects on child's independence; (3) families of raising by grand parents and raising by parents have salient differences on concept-orientation, child's independence and control of TV; male patriarchies have salient lower control of TV; there're differences between the influence of children on daily consumer goods, durable goods and ideological goods, but the influences are all strong.The conclusions of this research basically verified the effects which family communication patterns have on children's consumption abilities, and found some family communication patterns and children's consumption abilities differences between families raising by grandparents and raising by parents. But because of the limitation of time and energy, this research still has some limitations for further researches.
