Meng Xiancheng is a famous educator in the modern history of our country. He has made a lot of outstanding contributions in several fields of the education. And to his education thought, the mass education thought is an very inseparable and important section.Those advanced theories of psychology, sociology, and those theories and practice of education from other countries have been provided for the theoretical foundation and the important reference to his mass education thought. Meanwhile, the Theme of saving country and regenerating the Chinese Nation in modern China dominated the background of the thought's shaping. Meng Xiancheng introspected and criticized the old pedagogy, which separated from the masses and reality. At the same time, he absorbed the excellent results of various education thoughts and education theories actively. In the boom of mass education, he made an effort to engage in the research and practice, tried to explore a road of Chinese style, and formed his own mass education thought gradually.The content of Meng Xiancheng's mass education thought is rather rich, which includes his views on the meaning, the aims and objective, the contents, the implement and the experiment of the mass education; and a thorough discussion on many aspects in the implement , such as the teaching material, the teaching method and the teacher resources. Thus, it became a rather rich mass education ideology.Meng Xiancheng's mass education thought has several main characteristics: to face to the masses and stand for universal education; to consider the real conditions, when absorbs and learns from the foreign system and methods of education, they all should be identified; to advocate the lifelong education, education shouldn't be limited to one stage but kept on the whole life ; to pay attention to the practical value, the content of education must keep in close contact with the reality and the need of public; to implement opening education, to make the education expand from school to whole the society, and strengthen the ties between education and organizations in society; to be full of spirit of science, actively promotes the spread of science and technology as well as the popularization of scientific knowledge; to pay attention to the experiment of the mass education. Meng Xiancheng's mass education thought not only enriches our treasurehouse of educational theory, but also have practical significance to the reform and practice of Chinese education today.
