China began to conduct continuing education on high school teachers decades ago, which is one of the ways to teachers' professional development at present. In the studies on teachers' continuing education and professional development, many scholars have conducted a large amount of researches on the practical problems of continuing education as well as many concerning problems such as"promoting teachers' professional development" and "improving teachers' professional status". They found out some practical problems in existence in the continuing education and factors affecting teachers' professional development, and conducted the strategy studies of continuing education which promotes teachers' professional development. However, in my opinion there lacks sufficient research on the effectiveness of continuing education in promoting teachers' professional development. As a matter of fact, it is of the greatest importance for us teachers in real life to promote their professional development through the continuing education. Since the school is the major environment for teachers to grow up and become mature in terms of their profession, what kind of supporting system should it provide us teachers? How to provide the development strategy which can meet the demand for the teachers' professional development according to the characteristics and requirements of teacher training? This will become the new focus of concern.Through a case study and a research on the present continuing education for high school teachers, this study tries to point out the problems and disadvantages of continuing education in promoting teachers' professional development, and proposes the continuing education that can effectively promotes the professional development of high school teachers.This study adopts three research methods, i.e. literature review, questionnaire, and case study and carries out a case study on Wuxi No.6 Senior High School. It is a 3-star key senior high school in Wuxi City and has made fruitful achievements in its teachers' continuing education which can effectively promote the teachers' professional development. The main body of this paper explores from three aspects the effectiveness of continuing education in promoting teachers' professional development. The first is to explain the reason why continuing education is an effective way to promote teachers' professional development through the analysis of representation, guarantee and problems of the continuing education. The second is to analyze the continuing education widely adopted in and outside the school and its problems. The third is to propose the effective continuing education on the basis of the above analysis, thus drawing the developing conclusion of establishing an effective system of continuing education and providing a realistic visualization for that the continuing education can effectively promote teachers' professional development.
