A Study On Population Distributing And Function Area In Shanghai

The progress of population's development shows the spatial formation of population distributing which interacts with the productivity expanding level and the feature of regional structure. Industry is a representation of productivity; population distributing interacts with regional structure adjusting of industry.The population distributing in metropolitan areas changes a lot along with the social economic development. The experiences of international megapolises indicate that population suburbanization is the only way out during the expanding of big cities. Population suburbanization is a new tendency for city expansion in China. On the data about the fourth and the fifth National Census and the data about spot check of population in 2005, this paper analyses the changes about population distributing in Shanghai. There are some points. Since the implementation of the policies of reform ans opening to the outside world, the central area of Shanghai has been enlarged, the population density has been declining. Population suburbanization has become an abvious phenomenon with the continuous output of population from the urban core and the input of population form the fringe of city and the outskirts. As expected, population suburbanization in Shanghai will last for quite a long period and will be intensified as well.The structure and layout of industry in Shanghai has been adjusted since 1990s. Manufacturing moves to outskirts form the central place; some new industries replace it, such as modern service industry, technical industry, and so on. But the function areas of urban core lap over each other, and they are lopsided between district-district. Political Function Area locates in Huangpu District, and Culture Function Area in Jing'an, Xuhui and Changning Diatrict. Nearly each district has a Commerce Function Area at least, but more in Huangpu and Luwan. Mordern Service Function Area locates in Xuhui mostly, and Technical Function Area locates in Pudong and Xuhui.Based on the data about the First and The Second National Census of Basic Units, and the data about the First National Census of Economics, this paper analyses the distribution and alteration of people as employees in each districts. There are some points. Urban core is the focus of Shanghai, the fringe of city is a mixed area of Function Area and Habitation Area, the suburb is Habitation Area, and the ratio between people day and night of Outskirts is above the one of suburb, because the outskits are far form the downtown areas.
