Suburbanization is an inevitable stage of large cities' development in which population, jobs and servicing business etc. in the city move from inside to outside. As a main manifestation of suburbanization, population suburbanization is a process of population moving from centers of cities to suburbs or peripheral villages. Generally, when population in centers descends relatively or absolutely and population in suburbs increases evidently, the city entered the process of population suburbanization. After reading other scholars' academic achievement, collecting and arranging the data of the fourth national census and the fifth national census of Nanjing City, and in virtue of the index and models, I analysis the population change of Nanjing City, and then summarize that this city have already expressed the sign of suburbanization. So I think it started to enter the progress of the population suburbanization in 90's. Subsequently, comparing with Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenyang and Hangzhou, the thesis points out that Nanjing's population suburbanization lag behind the others and then analyzes its possible factor. This paper can be divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 elaborates its own basis and meanings, and then introduces related researches at home and abroad. Chapter 2 mainly expounds the conceptions, theories and models of population distribution and suburbanization. Chapter 3 introduces the change of region of Nanjing City and textual research district Chapter 4 studies population change of Nanjing City in 1990s by data of the fourth national census and the fifth national census. Chapter 5 compares the characteristics of suburbanization of Nanjing with other cities'. Chapter 6 does the summary of the synopsis to the full text, pointing out its shortage. The third, fourth and fifth chapter are the main body of the paper.Main conclusions of the paper are the following:(1) Populations of three regions of Nanjing City in 1990s were all in the increment, and the suburb area growth was most quick. The percentage of the center area to the total city was depressed. From the inside of the center area we can see that the core area's speed of population growth slowed down, and it was slower than the edge-part's. Because of that the edge-part became the tallest region in density of Nanjing City.(2)Analysis of the population distributes index provided that Nanjing's population distribution in 1990s trend to concentrate, but it's phenomenon of suburbanization was appeared. This city had entered into the primary stage of suburbanization.(3)The monocentric urban model indicates that the population density peak value of Nanjing in 1990s is still high, and people continued to concentrate to the center area. The polycentric urban model shows that there were two density centers in Nanjing in 1990s.(4)Compared with other cities, the population suburbanization of Nanjing in 1990s lagged behind others.
