The Study On The Ethnic Minority Population In Shanghai Since 1990s

With the further process of reform and opening up, the rapid economic and social development and the accelerating process of the western region's development, a large number of ethnic minority people migrate from national villages and western region to more developed cities in southeast coast such as Shanghai. The existence and function of ethnic minorities have great impacts on the harmonious progress of urban economy, society and culture, so it is essential to make a comprehensive understanding of ethnic minority in Shanghai. This article will refer from regional, integrated and dynamic research methods of human geography and demography fields. Based on the 4th and 5th Census information of Shanghai, China's minority population information and corresponding investigation data from CPPCC, this article uses the technology of statistical and GIS analysis together with the method of comparison between regions and minorities. A study on the quantity and structure, spatial distributing pattern, employment, living conditions and minority's culture inherit of the ethnic minorities in Shanghai is made, after that several existing problems on ethnic minorities and corresponding suggestions are collated.The study is made up of five chapters. Chapterl mainly describes the significance, content, data resources and research methods, and introduce the status quo of ethnic minorities' research in China. Chapter2 deals with the quantity and structure of ethnic minorities in Shanghai, and also makes a comparison between ethnic minorities in other big cities. Chapter3 emphasizes on the spatial distributing patterns and changes of ethnic minorities in Shanghai. First, it generalizes the features of their source regions and spatial distribution, next it compares Shanghai's ethnic minorities spatial distributing with that of Beijing and the whole people in Shanghai, and the spatial distributing of various minorities and different household registers is concerned. Chapter4 analyzes the status quo of employment and living conditions of ethnic minority in Shanghai.
