According to the report of the Chinese Communist Party's 16th People's Congress, our mission for education in the present era can be stated as 'to educate for people and socialism modernisation; to relate education to manufacturing activities and social practices; and to nurture competent and well-rounded people for the progress of the society'. Future builders of the nation should demonstrate sound ethical qualities and various professional skills. However, there are many ethical problems among the university students at present. The problem with their spending habit is one of the most serious. Spending ethics is an important area of study in ethics. Spending behaviour of university students is an important reflector of their ethical qualities. Their habit and value towards spending directly affect their life styles, moral values, their study, work and performances. This essay has developed some discussions regarding university students' spending ethics, keeping nurturing excellent ethics among them in mind. This essay has involved the application of ethics theories, psychological principles and micro-economics theories to analyse the spending behaviour of university students in the era of social structure transformation. It has also systematically studied the main characteristics of their spending habits including fashion-pursuing, dependency, etc. In this way, origins of this problem can thus be found. Discussions with depth have been made regarding phenomena like weakening of the cultural tradition, peer-pressure, aimless spending, overspending, self-centred spending and departing of spending and achieving success. Discussions have been made from several aspects including social aspect, educational aspect and individual aspect. The Chinese tradition of frugality and its effects on modern consumerism has also been studied. Some elements of frugality support the economic growth and the morals of people, but some elements of frugality hinder the growth of economy and personal development. University students should be guided when practicing frugality so that economic and personal development will not be harmed. The objective of this study (spending ethics of university students) is to provide theoretical support for guiding university students to spend conservatively, suitably, scientifically and responsibly. Hopefully it will make some advancement in guiding students to spend more wisely. And hopefully it can nurture more morally competent builders for our society.
