As the importance of primary English teaching is greatly highlighted by the whole society in recent years, primary English, as a compulsory course, is making itself into primary schools. However, primary school English teaching methods are still under exploration. A common phenomenon is that pupils' interest in English is decreasing as time moves on. And pupils become more and more passive in English class. Based on theoretical and practical considerations, this thesis aims to illustrate the meanings of games teaching in improving the interest of primary school students in their English learning. The present paper proposes some suggestions to the teaching of primary pupils and lists some important guidelines on the organization of games in classroom. In the mean time, it aims at drawing people's attention to the significance of games in primary English classrooms, thus, help to build a better perspective for future primary English teaching.There are four chapters in this thesis.The first chapter is an introduction. It mainly introduces the present situation of primary school English teaching in China and the existing problems. According to these problems, games teaching approach is introduced in order to improve primary school students' interest in English. In addition, a literature review is presented, which summarizes the history and result of the research about games teaching approach.The second chapter provides the theoretical bases of the thesis. It begins with the definition of game. Meanwhile, the types, characteristics and advantages of are introduced, together with the principles of using games in class teaching.The third chapter introduces the experiment, which was carried out in Grade 4, The Primary School Attached to Nanchang Normal School. A brief questionnaire with 6 questions on pupils' interest, together with the observations and the oral test was presented. The finding of the study suggested games teaching approach did play a role in primary school students' English learning. The games actually aroused students' interest.The fourth chapter is conclusion. It emphasizes the importance of games in teaching primary English. And the process of teaching through games should be under control with teaching objectives to serve the teaching content. It is necessary for the teachers to create new games with appropriate methods. Only in this way, substantial progress can be made in the improvement of pupils' interest.
