The need to develop the education of peasants, improve their overall quality andcultivate new knowledgeable peasants ensures the success of the construction of newsocialist countryside. Under these circumstances how to carry out the task. ofreeducating and retraining peasants becomes the top subject worth further study. Withan overall review of theories on peasant education both home and abroad, theresearcher conducted an investigation into issues concerned on peasant education inSheyang County, an underdeveloped county in Jiangsu Province, by interviewingcadres in charge of local peasant education, educators responsible for it and peasantsthemselves. Further analysis was also made of peasant education in Sheyang Countyin recent years with the purpose of probing into measures to better educate them.Research findings indicate that educational proficiency of the main labor force inthe countryside of Sheyang County is higher than their counterparts in other places;the percentage of the main labor force having received continued education and trainafter their graduation from school is relatively low; peasants usually have a highexpectation for continued education and train; grass-root educators and peasants sharethe same idea that reeducation of peasants should be stressed; the prime hurdle in thecourse of reeducating peasants is lack of funds; and there is a growing number ofpeasants who need continued education and train. Research also shows that theeconomy in the countryside of Sheyang County is now flourishing due to the fact thatthe local government has place more emphasis on the reeducation of peasants.Based on the theoretical analysis and practical research, countermeasures havebeen put forward in the thesis concerning how to reeducate and retrain peasants in the construction of new socialist countryside. They are as follows: 1) The governmentshould play a leading role in collecting funds, integrating educational resources, andestablishing a stable, well-structured panel of teachers working full time or part time;2) With the principle of "comprehensive education" in mind, educators should makedetailed examinations, choose teaching contents needed by peasants and adapt theirteaching methods to better suit them; 3) Peasants should be encouraged to take part inthe reeducation program actively and improve their awareness of initiative, investmentand new knowledgeable peasants.
