The modern society is so-called information society with new ideas replacing the old ones day and night. The traditional teaching methods, which lay too much emphasis on the input of information, cannot meet the needs of the information society. The conflict between the limited studying time in school and the unlimited increase of new information has pushed people to realize the importance of learning efficiency and the ability to learn by oneself. Teachers should not only introduce the knowledge but also guide the students to develop the efficient learning strategies and the ability to learn by themselves. The main purpose of this study is to explore the learning strategies employed by current senior high students and to examine the effect of the strategy training on English study.The thesis consists of five parts.Chapter One is the introduction, discussing the reason to choose this subject, the purpose of the study, the ways to carry out the study and the structure of the thesis.Chapter Two is the theoretical framework of the study and the general review of the relevant studies, defining and classifying the learning strategies, discussing the factors which would affect the using of learning strategies, introducing the relevant studies in language learning strategies and strategy training.Chapter Three is the survey about the using of learning strategies in English study among a group of Senior II students in an ordinary senior high school in Shanghai. The survey is made in three ways: questionnaire, personal interview and study diary. After analyzing the results, data about the using of learning strategies in English study in senior high is obtained, the relationship between the frequency of using the learning strategies and the English study achievement discussed, the differences of using learning strategies between the good English learners and poor English learners listed, and the needs for the strategy training from the students collected.Chapter Four introduces the process of the strategy training and reports the results of the training.Chapter Five summarizes the main findings of this study. According to the findings, some suggestions for teaching and learning are proposed. At the end, some limitations of this study are mentioned.
