English is becoming more and more important with the development of information society and the globalization of economy. As a carrier of information, English is used worldwide in numerous domains of human life. The syllabus of high school English (new) treats the ability of obtaining and handling information as one of the abilities that we should put great emphasis on. Nowadays English reading comprehension competence is becoming more important for senior high school students to go to college in China. Teaching English as a foreign language has a long history both at home and abroad, and the domestic and international scholars have achieved a lot in the research of teaching English reading(uncountable related articles have been published). Though many experts and teachers of English have been devoting themselves to developing approaches and solutions to help Chinese English students and seeking breakthroughs to solve their reading problems, a lot of students can not learn it well. They have been feeling it is a big problem to them.During the practice directed by different kinds of approaches or methods, it is found that none of them can be very successful in English teaching without students' development of vocabulary. They cannot be perfect, sometimes even feasible, unless students reach the required level of vocabulary. The root of the problems is that students have great weakness in vocabulary.Thus, based on those experts' research and the theories of modern language teaching, the author analyses the problems and obstacles in high school English reading learning and teaching and brings up some solutions--using reading English newspapers and magazines to increase reading input and channels to help students learn vocabulary in senior high schools.This paper consists of seven parts:Part one is the introduction, which states the significance of English and English reading from different aspects. It also shows the importance and the necessity of the study on reading obstacles and the solutions to them. The writer also shows lexical obstacle is the biggest problem to Chinese English students.Part two gives a brief account of the theories of English reading and lexicology, including their concepts and definitions. Here the writer retells and concludes the study on lexicology at home and abroad, that is lexical strategies.Part three analyses the two kinds of obstacles, which affect the reading efficiency in high schools, namely, language factors and non-language factors.In part four the writer investigates the students' difficulties in English reading comprehension competence, especially lexical obstacles, and analyses the reasons that lower the students' lexical abilities, namely the teaching concepts, teaching approaches and English language environment in China.Part five is the experiments among the 101 students in No.6 middle School in Changchun City, the author concludes reading English newspapers and magazines can help deal with the lexical obstacles of senior high school students in reading comprehension competence.Part six is the revelation and suggestions.
