It’s necessary and urgent to attach more importance to reading ability. Reading is a combination of words、grammar points and thoughts. As an important means of language input, it is an extremely useful approach to language learning. Meanwhile, we learn English for reading-understanding words and ideas. Through reading, students can improve their fundamental language ability. On one hand, the new curricular reform sets much higher reading goals for senior students; on the other hand, reading comprehension is where they lose the most marks. Thus, it’s meaningful to explore the obstacles that get in the way of reading comprehension and accordingly to find solutions to these obstacles.In order to find out the reasons why students fail to understand, the author of the paper uses the adapted test papers from NEMT to test the students in Huainan No.2 middle school. Combined with the questionnaire on the factors of failing to understand, conclusions can be drawn. Last, based on the data analysis and talk with teachers, the paper present a series of practical and constructive suggestions on how to improve reading.
