Reading, as an important part of language competence, is the main channel forpeople to get information and communicate. Senior school teachers pay moreattention to English reading teaching, but the reading comprehension of students insenior middle schools improved slowly. This paper is based on Halliday and Hasan’s cohesion theory, and tries to useHoey’lexical repetition theory in English reading teaching in senior middle schools tofind a new model, that is lexical repetition-based reading teaching model, to improvestudents’reading ability, efficiency, and cultivate their reading interests. According toHoey’s repetition theory, the relationship between cohesive links is hierarchical ratherthan linear. Through analyzing the lexical repetition patterns, it is easy for readers toidentify the topic opening, to find or to summarize the central sentences and marginalsentences in a passage. This model stresses lexical repetition-based reading teachingmodel which is on the basis of the text level, and also emphasizes to understand a textas a whole. This new model provides a new horizon to senior middle school students, and can help senior middle school teachers teach better in the future. Therefore, thisstudy has great significance. This study undertakes a pre-test/post-test equivalent classes design and uses aconvenient sample, which are two intact classes from the Teng Zhou No.1 HighSchool of Shandong province. The two classes are respectively regarded as thecontrol class and the experimental class. There are a total of 130(66 students incontrol class and 64 students in experimental class) subjects participating in theexperiment. In data collection, a reading test and a questionnaire survey are given to130 students. Students in experimental class are trained by lexical repetition modelsfor a semester, and then another questionnaire and reading test are done. The scoresare analyzed by SPSS16.0.The results show that this new reading teaching model is helpful to students’reading ability and reading comprehension. It can enhance students’awareness oflexical cohesion in a ext and help them grasp the main idea quickly or form the summary of a text. It also can help students understand a text as a whole.
